The legendary guitar quartet of Los Romeros will be touring the USA throughout November 2015 with the Munich Symphony, conducted by Philippe Entremont, performing three guitar concertos: Concierto andaluz and Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo and Concierto de Málaga by Celedonio Romero.
Known as ‘The Royal Family of the Guitar’, the quartet of Los Romeros was founded by Celedonio Romero with his sons Celín, Pepe and Angel in 1958. The Royal aspect of their title refers not only to their magnificent, virtuosic playing but also to their generosity of spirit in sharing their knowledge and experience, and welcoming musicians into their home and lives; they continue to teach and inspire guitarists throughout the world.
Now in their 57th year, and continuing to maintain the family’s international reputation, the quartet has Celín and Pepe with the sons of Celín and Angel: Celino Romero and Lito Romero – and they are just as indefatigable as ever; none more so than Pepe, who has just completed a series of four concerts with the Dallas Symphony, conducted by Yan Pascal Tortelier, performing the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas on 29, 30 and 31 October and 1 November 2015.
On his way to New York for the start of the tour, Pepe wrote to say:
I am on my way to meet my family, Philippe Entremonte and the Munich Symphony for an extraordinary tour of the eastern United States. I am filled with anticipation and excitement to see my dear friend, the great Maestro Philippe Entremont and once again, make beautiful music together.
This tour will be a great celebration of friendship and family sealed by the magnificent music of Joaquín Rodrigo and my father, Celedonio Romero.
My father’s Concierto de Málaga was a collaboration resulting from the fraternal friendship between the great Spanish composer Federico Moreno Torroba and my father. The music was composed by my father and orchestrated by Torroba. The concerto is very much in flamenco style, recalling the music my father heard in his youth in the mountains of Málaga, with the first movement being a soleares and the last movement a tango-tientos. The second movement expresses the nostalgic memories of the first five years of his life in the beautiful island of Cuba.
Together with Celín, Celino and Lito we will be performing the great Concierto andaluz, which was written for and dedicated to us by Rodrigo.
The always beloved Concierto de Aranjuez, which Philippe and I have already performed on numerous occasions, will be a wonderful reunion!
I hope to see you there!
un abrazo
Those who have had the great pleasure of being with the Romero family know that when Pepe Romero says ‘you’, he means all of us!
