Marking the 40th day since the death of Julian Bream

The classical guitarist and lutenist JULIAN BREAM,

who celebrated his 87th birthday on 15 July 2020,

passed away peacefully at his home on Friday 14 August 2020.

To mark the 40th day since Julian Bream’s death, I found this performance by Alberto Mesirca of Federico Mompou’s Suite Compostelana particularly expressive.

Recorded at Teatro Accademico of Castelfranco Veneto, 24 April 2020 by film-maker Alberto Arsie

Julian Bream recorded the Suite Compostelana by Federico Mompou on his 1984 Julian Bream: A Celebration of Andrés Segovia (Music of Spain, Vol. 7) album (RCA ARC1-5306). Like so many of Julian Bream’s recordings (and concerts), the programming made it extra special. Also on this recording are Maurice Ohana’s Tiento, Roberto Gerhard’s Fantasia and the Homenaje, pour le Tombeau de Claude Debussy by Manuel de Falla, as well as works by Joaquín Turina and Federico Moreno Torroba.

I thank Alberto Mesirca for allowing me to share his performance here.

  1. Although I never became a professional player, Julian Bream, with his beautiful tone and interpretation of J S Bach in particular, inspired me to play the classical guitar in preference to the electric guitar which I immediately abandoned on hearing his version of the Chaconne.
